Non-Destructive Testers use a variety of scientific methods and equipment to assess the integrity and properties of a material without damaging it. Types of testing methods include: eddy current testing, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing.

Responsibilities

  • Determine type of testing methods to be used for the assessment.
  • Conduct testing on materials, components, structures, etc. following established processes and procedures.
  • Compile, analyze and communicate data gathered from testing methods.
  • Can be found working in a variety of sectors including construction, manufacturing, automotive, etc.

Entering the Trade

Non-Destructive Tester is not a designated trade in New Brunswick. Individuals looking to enter the field should complete high school and seek additional education through various post-secondary institutions/organizations that offer training in the various testing methods (for example, Quality Control Council of Canada, Canadian Welding Bureau, etc.). Non-destructive testing certification by Natural Resources Canada is available in three levels and is usually required by employers.
